The Flickering Candle

The Flickering Candle- Poetry by Toni Medeiros Craig

The room was dark and a slight breeze
was gently carressing my naked body.
The flicker of the candle cast a mellow glow.
The door slowly opened and was left ajar.

I closed my eyes to erace the fear that was
creeping in my bones.
No one appeared behind the door.
There was only darkness and deafening silence.

I clutched at my pillow to give me strength.
The fear I felt was mounting
and paranoia was setting in.
My heart was pounding, and I could
no longer hear the sounds of the night.

Footseps were dancing in my head.
They came closer to me, as I saw the flicker
of light flash before my eyes.

My mind was incapable of rambling free.
I could only feel the fear that gripped at my senses.
I stared at the flame from the flickering cande.
It was my strength,
and the only thing I could grasp.

Somehow I found the courage to open my eyes.
My body was trembling,
and my heart was jumping in my throat.
The breeze grew stronger and blew out the candle.

My body was incapable of moving.
I felt the light touch
of a presence in the room.
I searched frantically for something
that would give me a clue.
I lit the candle, and suddenly realized
that the flickering light was causing my fear
it cast the shadows of all my fears.
